At one point we counted 5 of them over the field with sheep (alongside the oak avenue), where they really stood out against the green grass. Probably hanging around for a <A HREF="http://www.gigrin.co.uk/w/captured_by_kites.html">snack</A> in no small part thanks to Mr Butty. And on Springwatch it was said that the adults often get bald from the constant entering and leaving of the nest box and rubbing their feathers on the entrance hole. ]]> Tue May 2 2006 Crawford the bizarre earless white cat http://nisbet.fotopic.net/c933595.html Crawford came to live with us in St Annes in December 2002 after spending some time with Cats Protection. They were very nice to him and that's where he got his name. Before that, well, that's a bit of a mystery, and the story of how he became a stray always intrigued us. His ears had been removed professionally. A lot of expensive surgery had been performed. White cats are prone to skin cancer and we think it's unlikely he was tufted out on the street or abandoned. He did have a bit of a wanderlust and a strange fascination with Irwell Street. He developed a tumour and had a short but exciting life with us. Phone calls from the public were not uncommon. They'd find him in the street looking pathetic and dejected not realising that this was his favourite ploy. We even had a surprise visit from the RSPCA who'd had an anonymous tip-off. We'd have to be pretty thick to mistreat a cat then print his name and phone number on his id tag. We never did work out his age. He may have been quite a young cat and was just unlucky. He was pretty perky when he joined us and it was his tumour that got him in the end. He's still around though. As a <A HREF="http://www.geocaching.com/track/details.aspx?id=118891">geocaching travel bug</A> he's padding across the land.
