 | 20th Apr 2009 | Blue Tit Nestbox (20 images)
Could be interesting times ahead as a magpie takes an interest. Timestamps show it flew in 2seconds after blue tit.

 | 9th Apr 2009 | Unidentified Flower (8 images)
I can't figure out what this flower is. Struggling to key it out in Francis Rose. Is it a Garden Escapee? It is prolific under a Silver Birch where I removed lots of Rhododendron.

Last year's nestbox has been ignored. There's activity in a new Silver Birch nestbox (on a Silver Birch tree). Nestbuilding has started earlier this year. This box is registered on the BTO Nest Box Challenge project.

 | 14th Jan 2007 | Red Kites (6 images)
Normally the best views of the kites are around Barlow Fell, but for the first time we got cracking views of them over Gibside. At one point we counted 5 of them over the field with sheep (alongside the oak avenue), where they really stood out against the green grass. Probably hanging around for a snack in no small part thanks to Mr Butty.

 | 15th Apr 2006 to 9th Jun 2006 | Blue Tits visiting their nestbox in a Durham garden (51 images)
I have no idea what's going on here. A pair of blue-tits coming and going to a recently placed nestbox. One of the birds looks very odd. Perhaps in moult. A Bald Blue-Tit? A couple of messages on the Bigg Bird Forum suggests this happens to some adults towards the end of the breeding season. And on Springwatch it was said that the adults often get bald from the constant entering and leaving of the nest box and rubbing their feathers on the entrance hole.
The blue tit family left the nest on Friday 9th June 2006. The last photographs I got were of the adults the day before.

 | 11th Mar 2006 to 17th Mar 2006 | Pertisau, Austria (11 images)
These were taken on a holiday to Pertisau in Austria. We were there to try a bit of Cross-country-skiing. It was just the end of the winter season and the snow was beginning to melt and get slushy and yucky.

 | 4th Feb 2006 | Boats on the River Wear (7 images)
Walking into the city one sunny morning we came upon the slightly surreal scene of dozens of boats on the River Wear. The boats were queuing downriver towards Prebends Bridge before starting the competition and racing upriver.

 | 12th Dec 2005 | Belmont Viaduct (14 images)
A little north of Durham City can be found the old Belmont viaduct (also known as Brasside viaduct). It used to carry the main-line but is now long closed. It is not accessible to the public which is a great shame as it'd be a fantastic and dramatic walk across the river. It is also at the centre of a long-running controversy over one of the proposed routes for a northern Northern Bypass.
Belmont Viaduct has also been mentioned in relation to the wonderful Necklace Park project, a fantastic idea to link up recreational parks and green areas along the river and through the city. A recent thread in the North East forums suggests that this is a real possibility.

 | 12th Sep 2005 | The Three Towers, White Hill, Forest of Bowland (9 images)
These photos were taken on a hike to The Three Towers geocache in the Forest of Bowland.
I'm not sure on my identification of the beastie. I spent some time leafing through my Collins wildlife book and I'm not sure I came to the correct conclusion, so please feel free to leave a comment to correct or agree with me.
And what are The Three Towers all about? Does anyone know?
